An overview of the political situation in all the countries from the Bohemian mountains to the Arabian Gulf, published just before the onset of World War I. With a preface by the French historian Anatole Leroy-Beaulieu. The part on the Middle East is divided into 3 chapters covering Western Asia, Ottoman Asia and the Bagdad railway. The railway was built from 1903 to 1940 to connect Berlin with the (then) Ottoman Empire city of Baghdad, from where the Germans wanted to establish a port in the Gulf.
