Originally published in 1902 as Das Arabische Reich und sein Sturz, the first chapter describes the earlier years of Islam under the rule of the Prophet Muhammad and the four Rashidun Caliphs. The main part of the book describes the wars and secular and religious politics under the Umayyad Caliphs, based on numerous ancient sources.
